Case 6: Carotid Artery Stenosis
&
the Folly of Chasing Cholesterol
Peter is a 60 year old patient who initially consulted
with me for erectile dysfuncton, hypertension, elevated
cholesterol and beginning stages of Type II Diabetes.
To be quite honest, Peter was a stubborn fellow.
Liked his cigarettes, ate terrible and hated exercise. If
it wasn't for his wife, he probably wouldn't have taken the
time to come see me.
Well let me move on and give you a little information to
ponder on:
Peter had been under the medical management of
his internist since 1997 for hypercholesterolemia and hypertension. His
array of medications included Vaseretic, Lipitor, Zocor,
Diovan, Hydrochlorot, Vytorin, Benicar, Norvasc.
According to Peter's physician he was pleased with his progress
and contributed his "excellent" improvement on the medications
listed above.
Now here is the twist and I want you to really give some
thought to what I am about to reveal.
Just recently, Peter was sent for a carotid doppler
ultrasound and guess what was found:
Well here is the exact impression:
Bilateral carotid doppler ultrasound demonstrated total
occlusion at the left internal carotid artery and
approximately 49% narrowing of the proximal
right internal carotid artery.
Hmm...
Ok, you probably agree this is not good news.
Well hang in there and let me go back a few years and
update you on a missing piece of the puzzle.
